I Swore and I Swear

by patndoris on Mar.05, 2009,under Computers

I swore I wouldn’t do it. And I still swear I’m not going to…until I’m forced to. I refuse to install IE 8 on my laptop. I know, I know, lots of people are using it. I’m sure they are very happy with it - maybe. But, I tried it awhile back (several betas back and in the midst of a Flash problem/crisis) and I disliked it so much I uninstalled it the very same night as I tried it.

...

But today, I made a decision. No, I’m not going back on what I just said - I’m not using it at home. But I’m so darn tired of seeing the updates on Filehippo that I decided to go ahead and install it at work. First of all - it took forever to install on my measly single core processor with the hamster running as fast as the little wheel would go. I was unimpressed again from the get-go. But still I carried on.

I mean, I do use Chrome as my main browser at work anyway, so it’s not that big of a deal right? I’m not so sure! After it finally finished I quickly closed it for fear of actually having to use it. Later, when I was having a small issue with a site on Chrome I decided to try it in IE 8 just for kicks.

Um…I’m SO not impressed. Not only did the page not load in IE 8 either, but it was all messed up beyond belief. It claimed it was running in compatibility mode but I’ll be darned if I saw one little thing that looked remotely like what it was supposed to. Now granted, maybe - just maybe, it was the website I was on - but still! I’m very very unhappy with my choice already and I only tried it for 45 seconds.

I’m not sure it’s gonna make the cut on the work machine. I’m really disappointed with all the hype. Maybe I’m being overly critical. Maybe it’s just the sites I’m hitting. Or maybe IE 8 really is just lousy!!

Thoughts, comments and sympathetic bashing welcomed!
